VPS for email marketing

A VPS for email marketing burns in weeks. Here's what to run instead.

Renting a VPS, installing an MTA and sending from it sounds cheap and free of restrictions. It is neither. Most hosts prohibit bulk mail, port 25 is often blocked, the IP has a history you don't know, and a single blacklisting ends the project. This page explains what a working VPS setup actually requires, and what SendHaven does differently.

Why people rent a VPS for email marketing

Three reasons, all reasonable: a mainstream ESP refused or closed the account, per-email pricing became absurd at volume, or the sender wants to own the stack. A €20 VPS and an open-source MTA looks like the answer. Sometimes it is, for a technically strong team with time to spare and a tolerant host. Usually it ends with a blacklisted IP and a support ticket from the host.

What a working email VPS actually requires

  1. A host that allows bulk mail. Most mainstream VPS providers prohibit it in the terms and block outbound port 25 by default. The ones that allow it tend to have IP ranges with poor reputation precisely because they allow it.
  2. A clean IP. You inherit whatever the previous tenant did. Check every major blacklist and the Spamhaus listings before sending anything, and be ready to request a new IP.
  3. Reverse DNS, SPF, DKIM, DMARC. PTR record matching the hostname, SPF including the IP, 2048-bit DKIM signing, DMARC with reporting. Any one missing and Gmail will treat you as suspicious.
  4. An MTA tuned for bulk. Postfix or PowerMTA with per-destination rate limits, retry schedules and bounce processing. Default Postfix will hammer Gmail and get throttled.
  5. Warmup. Four to six weeks from a few hundred sends a day to full volume, engaged recipients first.
  6. Monitoring. Blacklists, bounce rates, complaint rates, Google Postmaster Tools, every day.
  7. A plan for the burn. One IP means one blacklisting stops everything. You need a second server ready, and a process to rebuild and re-warm.

That is a part-time job before the first campaign and a full-time one at volume. It is also exactly what SendHaven's monthly fee pays for.

If root access and a €30 bill are the requirement, a VPS is the only option and this page has told you what to do with it. If sending that inboxes is the requirement, the VPS is the expensive choice once you price your time and your downtime.

When a VPS for email marketing is the right call

  • You have a sysadmin who has run production MTAs and has time for this.
  • You are sending low volume to a warm, opted-in list and can afford to lose the IP.
  • You need to run specific software on the box that no managed provider will run for you.
  • You are building a sending product and the infrastructure is the product.

Outside those cases, the question to ask is not "which VPS" but "who will replace the server at 2am when it burns during the campaign". That is what a managed dedicated SMTP server is for.

VPS for email marketing FAQ

The list changes constantly because providers tighten their terms after abuse. In general, the large mainstream clouds prohibit bulk mail and block port 25; smaller providers that allow it often have IP ranges with poor reputation. Check the acceptable-use policy and the IP's blacklist status before paying for a month.

Each SendHaven server is a dedicated VPS with a dedicated IPv4, but you don't get root access to it. You get SMTP and API credentials and we run the server, monitor it and replace it when burned. It is the managed version of what you'd build on a VPS.

You can, and it is the most common way setups fail: one complaint spike blacklists the only IP and takes the application offline with it. Run the application elsewhere and send through dedicated delivery servers. The MailWizz hosting page shows the split.

Technically, hundreds of thousands. Practically, as many as the IP's reputation allows, which for a new IP is a few hundred a day rising over four to six weeks of warmup. Volume is never the constraint; reputation is.

Request delisting where the blacklist allows it, fix the cause (list quality or content), and usually move to a new IP, which means a new VPS, a rebuild and a fresh warmup. With SendHaven that sequence is a server replacement we do for you, included in the plan.
